Overview
A Precision-Based Approach to
Soft Tissue Recovery.
Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, hands-on treatment system designed to identify and correct soft tissue dysfunction caused by overuse, injury, and repetitive movement. By combining precise manual tension with guided movement, ART helps break down scar tissue, restore mobility, and support your body's natural healing process.
Treatment is applied by hand: your therapist makes contact with the affected tissue using specific pressure and tension, then takes it from a shortened position to a fully lengthened one while you move — actively wherever you can tolerate it. The technique changes with the tissue and the diagnosis.
Commonly Helps With:
- Back & Neck Pain
- Sciatica & Nerve Entrapment
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Tennis Elbow

Questions Answered
Everything You
Need to Know.
What is Active Release Technique (ART)?
ART is a patented soft tissue treatment that combines precise manual therapy with guided movement to treat muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves affected by injury or overuse.
What conditions can ART help treat?
Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.
What happens during an ART session?
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The provider uses their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These unique treatment protocols, with over 500 in all, allow providers to identify and correct specific problems.
Is Active Release Technique painful?
You might feel some tension or slight pain during the hands-on part of the session. Most people call it a “good hurt” or a deep stretch. As the tissue releases, you may feel a sense of warmth or ease in that spot.
How is ART different from a deep tissue massage?
A deep tissue massage is passive — you stay still on the table while the therapist works through the deeper layers of muscle with slow, firm strokes to release knots and tension. ART asks you to move: your therapist holds precise tension on the tissue while you take that part of the body through its range, which is what frees adhesions and trapped nerves. Deep tissue work suits general stiffness; ART targets nerve pain and overuse injuries.
How many ART sessions will I need?
The number of visits you need depends on your injury. Simple muscle and joint problems can often be resolved in five or fewer sessions, while more complex or long-term issues may need between 8 and 20 sessions to reach the best result. Your provider looks at your health history, your activity level, and the area of pain, then builds a plan around you.
Is Active Release Technique covered by insurance?
Coverage depends on your plan. Physio Logic accepts most major insurance carriers, in- and out-of-network, and offers a complimentary insurance verification before you schedule — our team contacts your provider to confirm your benefits and any out-of-pocket cost, so you know what a session costs before you book.
