Questions Answered
Everything You Need to Know About
Sports & Medical Massage
What is sports and medical massage?
Sports and medical massage — also called manual therapy — uses targeted hands-on techniques to address muscle tension, soft tissue restrictions, mobility concerns, and recovery needs. It reaches deeper layers of muscle and fascia to help release restricted and adhered tissues.
What is the difference between sports and medical massage?
Sports massage is designed for athletes and active individuals, emphasizing injury prevention, performance enhancement and recovery, and it combines deep tissue work with stretching and mobilization. Medical massage reaches deeper layers of muscle and fascia to help release restricted and adhered tissues, and works as a complement to physical therapy. Our therapists are trained in both, and often integrate several modalities in one session.
Is massage therapy painful?
Deeper work can be intense, but it should never be unbearably painful. You may feel some discomfort as your therapist works through areas of chronic tension or adhesions, but it should feel like pressure and release rather than sharp or intolerable pain. Communication is essential — we adjust pressure based on your feedback and your tolerance.
Do I have to be a Physio Logic patient to book a massage?
No. Physio Logic massage therapy is available to everyone — you do not have to be a patient here to book a sports or medical massage. Sessions are by appointment only.
Is massage therapy covered by insurance?
The manual therapy built into a physical therapy session is part of that visit. Full-length massage sessions booked outside of physical therapy or chiropractic care are not covered by insurance, but can be used toward flexible spending accounts offered by some insurance companies.
How often should I receive massage therapy?
It depends on your condition and your goals. For acute injuries or severe chronic pain we may recommend weekly sessions to begin with, then move to bi-weekly or monthly maintenance sessions as your condition improves. Your therapist sets that schedule with you based on how you respond to treatment.
Can massage therapy be part of my rehabilitation?
Yes. Sports and medical massage — manual therapy — is an integral part of treatment at Physio Logic. Physical therapy patients receive individualized manual therapy built into each physical therapy session, and our licensed massage therapists work closely with the physical therapists and chiropractors to provide effective, individualized treatment for each patient.
